Ermoupolis, the capital of Syros as well as the entire of Cyclades, owes its name to Hermes, the god of trade. Known by various names such as Little Milan, the Duchess of the Aegean, and the Queen of the Cyclades, the city experienced great economic prosperity during the 19th century which was followed by a social and cultural development and the appearance of a Greek bourgeoisie. Ermoupolis' port was, at a point, busier than Athens'. The glorious past of the capital can still be seen in its wonderful neoclassical architecture: old mansions, marble paved streets, grandiose marble squares, imposing churches, monuments, statues, mausoleums, as well as superbly preserved neoclassical buildings which adorn the amphitheatrically built city. As if all this was not enough, the entirety of the island is surrounded by shallow crystal-clear turquoise waters washing up on golden sandy shores at every turn.

This traditional home is one of these wonderfully preserved mansions. It was built in the 1830's during the rise of Ermoupolis. The home has been completely renovated and refurbished to encompass all modern amenities whilst simultaneously retaining its authentic charm. The home owner has maintained the building's basic structure and room layout, and all restorations have been done with authentic materials. The entire split-leveled ground floor is at your disposal, incorporating 3 bedrooms, a large fully functional kitchen, living room, dinning area, and two bathrooms. The home's atmosphere is quite cosmopolitan and artistic. No wonder, since the owner is an artist herself, using the first floor of the building as her atelier to create her art...a selection of which can be found hanging in the home itself. Should you wish to view the private collection, or even have a painting lesson or two, all you need to do is knock on the door upstairs...

The home's location couldn't be better. The building is located in the heart of Ermoupolis, a few meters from the magnificent marble town hall and square. The port, shops, taverns, market etc are all a few minutes away by foot, and still, because the home is situated high enough, its is extremely quiet and serene when you want to relax after a adventurous day out.

If you wish to visit one of the Aegean's most prominent and beautiful islands bursting with unique history and architecture, as well as natural coastal splendor, using this home as a base for your adventure is one of the best choices that you can make.
